Julia booked in with us for her fall wedding in 2024. At her Preview Appointment, she brought along inspo photos full of pink-toned shadows and soft winged liner — she had a clear vision and wanted to feel like an absolute babe all day long. As we talked through her skincare routine and what she hoped for, two big concerns came up: her hair falling flat and her combination skin breaking down her makeup halfway through the day. Totally valid, and totally fixable.

After analyzing her skin and having a good chat, I wasn’t 100% sure if she was truly combination or more on the oily side. So, for her Preview, I treated her skin as combination. Why? Because using products designed for oily skin on a true combo-skin girlie can actually backfire — drying things out too much, which leads to dullness, dehydration, and cakiness. And let’s be honest… the Alberta climate doesn’t help.

I prepped her skin with a hydrating cream, layered on a gripping primer, and doubled down with a setting spray as a base. We finished the look, and she loved her glam — so much so that she headed out for a dinner date with her fiancé right after.

A few days later, I followed up to see how the look held up. She said she was still obsessed with the makeup, but her natural oils started peeking through after a few hours, and the front pieces of her hair lost a bit of their hold — which we suspected might happen. That’s the whole point of a Preview: to test, adjust, and perfect for the sweat-proof makeup and hair.

So for the big day, I refined her prep. I swapped the cream moisturizer for lightweight, water-based layers, incorporated a theatre-grade toner for oily skin, and misted between steps to lock everything in. For her hair, I built in extra texture, turned the heat up just a touch, and held the curls longer around the face to boost hold.

And the result?
